It includes an intriguing explanation of "many prodigies" spotted in 214 BC, "phantom ships" that were seemingly "seen gleaming in the sky". However, experts still debate whether this version was intended as a factual observation or an ominous metaphor.

 

ANGEL HAIR

"Angel hair" is an inquisitively frequent aspect of UFO sightings. This sticky substance is said to be left behind by the apparent aliens. A historian Cassius Dio, somewhere around 196 AD, reported how "fine rain resembling silver descended from a clear sky upon the Forum of Augutus". He recounted, "they retained the same appearance for three days, but by the fourth day all the substance rubbed on them had disappeared."

 

THE NUREMBERG SPECTACLE

In April 1561, some strange thing reportedly lit up the sky over Nuremberg. As per the records from a contemporary account, the sky was filled with garishly vivid objects, from "blood-red semi-circular arcs" to dark balls of "black ferrous color". These unknown objects started rushing back and forth, "fighting among themselves". In the end, they fell down onto the earth and "wasted away" with "immense smoke." Many people confirmed that they saw that "UFO battle", which was later venerated in a woodcut engraving.

 

THE THUNDEROUS WASHBASIN

The Annals of the Joseon Dynasty, narrating Korean life, is one of the great treasures of academic literature. In some pages of these annual records, there is an astounding version of a UFO, which apparently appeared in September 1609 in "clear and cloudless skies". It was portrayed as a "washbasin" resemblance and made a "thunderous sound" when it flew through the sky as speedily as an arrow before vanishing into flashes.
